All Team members are part of the Fire Service and are drawn from both uniformed and non-uniformed departments. The Team was formed in 1987 and members now number over twenty. All are trained in freefall parachuting and only after 200 descents are they allowed to join their colleagues at displays.
Through the Team's work we have been able to do two very important things. The first is to promote the message of fire safety and secondly to assist in fund raising for charity. It is important to point out that the Team is not funded by public money from the Fire Authority, it relies on sponsorship from industry.
The Team performs a breath-taking display of parachuting as they exit the aircraft at up to 12,000 feet. The team hurtle towards the ground at some 130 mph with smoke trailing from the formation made by the team in freefall. From the final formation, a spectacular starburst of flying bodies eventually open their distinctive red canopies. Still with smoke trails and now with banners suspended from special harnesses, they spiral down to land with pinpoint accuracy in the arena below.
